Are You Always Hungry? Here's Four Reason Why
Hunger is an instinctive mechanism designed to ensure your body gets food, the fuel it needs to function.
When our stomach is empty it makes a hormone called ghrelin, which travels to the brain to tell us that we’re hungry. When our stomach becomes stretched with food and drink it stops producing ghrelin.
Our desire to eat is triggered by a host of factors apart from an empty stomach – medical, emotional, and social. So let’s explore what makes us eat.
1. Fast Metabolism
The faster your metabolism, the more fuel you need. So having a fast metabolism might amount to burning 100 to 400 extra calories a day.
2. You’re Eating Refined Foods
Processed foods—like white bread, cookies, even salad dressings—spike your blood sugar and then leave you feeling even hungrier than you were before you ate the stuff. High-fat, high-sugar foods interfere with mood-regulating chemicals in the brain, leading to symptoms of depression and overeating.
3. You’re Confusing Hunger with Appetite
Many people who are “always hungry” actually just always want to eat. Hunger is a primal biological drive associated with physical symptoms, such as headache, shakiness, and intestinal contractions leading to that hungry, gurgling sound from your stomach. On the other hand, appetite is a psychological drive in which you desire a particular food and seek it.
4. Lack of sleep
When the body doesn't have enough rest, our body functions tends to slow down especially the production of hormone, Leptin. This hormone sends signal to our brain that we are already full. Also, when you are sleep deprived, the brain starts ro stimulate food as a source of replacement for sleep or pleasure.
